5 Days Before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Hits the Cinemas

9 years, that was how long it took Lord of the Rings fans to wait for the installment of the classic film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit", which was set sixty years before The Lord of the Rings. The movie will then be followed by The Desolation of the Smug and There and Back Again to be respectively release in 2013 and 2014.

The story starts with the hobbit Bilbo Baggins played by Martin Freeman, who is chosen by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to join a troupe of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) in their journey across Middle-Earth to reach The Lonely Mountain and reclaim a stolen treasure from the terrifying dragon Smaug.

Here's the whole synopsis from its production company:
"Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities ... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know."
Although, we may not see other main characters from The Lord of the Rings like Aragorn Sam and my favorite blond elf Legolas in this installment, The Hobbit will let us see Gandalf, Bilbo, Galadriel, Elrond and Gollum back together in the big screen. And the best part is, Frodo, the small but terrible main character of The Lord of the Rings will also take a part in the movie. Isn't that exciting?

"I’ve worn big hairy feet, a wig and pointy ears for a year ...I’m glad to see the back of them," said Martin Freeman about playing the role of hobbit Bilbo Baggins. “It’s been a challenge, but it’s been such a joy.”

"I was a little bit worried about repeating myself or competing with myself," said its director, Peter Jackson about filming The Hobbit and the high expectations set for the film. "I thought lightning could only strike once."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is produced by New Line Cinema, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Wingnut Films and 3Foot7. The film was written and directed by Peter Jackson, collaborating with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro. It is to be distributed by Warner Bros. and be released worldwide on December 14, 2012.
